When the cycling season pedals off later this month, gold medalist at last year’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Champ-ionships, Paul DeNobrega, will no longer be a junior but will be looking to sound his arrival on the senior circuit and aim for the 2016 Olympic Games.
“This year I am not a junior anymore so I have to be more serious and step up my game” said DeNobrega yesterday during an interview with Stabroek Sport.
“My goals are to try and make all the senior tours and make my club and my country proud” “I am aiming to train harder and be more focused to try and make all the senior tours and prepare my self for the next Olympic Games in Brazil” DeNobrega declared.
The former junior star cyclist who turns 19 next month, acknowledged that he had a successful 2012 but hopes that his form is further improved this year.
“I had a successful year, I won the Junior Championships in Dominica Republic, I won races in Antigua in Anguilla and Suriname so I hope the form I had last year not only comes over to his year but for me to further improve and build on last year’s success”.
DeNobrega who rode for Miami based Team Coco’s in the latter part of last year and placed second in last year’s five-stage road race also revealed that Team CoCo’s will be forming a local club of which himself and junior star riders, Raynauth Jeffrey, Raul Leal and Michael Anthony (last year’s juvenile gold medalist at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships) will be a part of.
“I will join Team CoCo’s because we are not really getting benefits from any other clubs in Guyana” said the former Continental Cycling Club rider. “So I have already resigned from former club and I will be riding for Team Coco’s, hopefully QB (Team Coco’s owner) who plans on taking us overseas to train and prepare for the Olympics, continues to help us to make the club and Guyana proud”.
The 2013 cycling season will pedal off with the annual Ricks and Sari Agro Industries Limited staged an 11-race cycling meet which will be staged in the National Park on January 26.
