Roger Hinds is elated at having won the 2013 Chutney Monarchy and the chance to represent Guyana in Trinidad and Tobago.
The reigning Calypso Monarch, who is known as ‘Young Bill Rogers’, won the title for his song “Chutney for my Larki (Girl)” and is the first non-Indian to win the title.
He said this was the third time he had entered the Chutney competition and he hopes to make Guyana proud at the International Chutney Soca Monarch Competition in Trinidad and Tobago, where the prize will be TT$1 million.
Asked about the negativity that emerged after his win, Hinds said he was not affected by it in the least.
Preferring to deal with his success, he said he did not think the international competition would be much of a challenge considering that he had performed in Trinidad and Tobago before.
Hinds expressed thanks to God, Payless Variety Store, Shakti Strings Orchestra, Habeeb Khan and others for supporting him.
