Dear Editor,
This morning (January 8) was the opening of the assizes. I am unaware as to whether the public was notified beforehand and if so, whether the notice depicted the route that would have been closed. However, the perimeter bounded by Regent and High Streets to High and Croal Streets on the west and Camp and South Road and Camp Street and Brickdam on the east was shut off to the travelling public.
One can imagine the consternation and frustration commuters experienced since the roadways whose access was denied provided the major arteries for vehicular traffic. Workers suffered major inconvenience for many did not get to work on time and the rest of the travelling public who had prior time-specific appointments would have been similarly frustrated.
But, who cares? What was important to the administration, it would appear, was the ‘gala pomp and ceremony’ (sic) that was being portrayed. Little concern seems to have been given to the man-hours lost or the road rage or other inconvenience caused.
It may be perceived that the public that was so disdainfully treated is of little importance, and the treatment and the attendant fallout was of little consequence to those who planned and executed the event.
Well, we are going places. Good job administrators. Best wishes Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Hubert C Roberts
