Following the conclusion of its senior Inter County limited overs competition on Tuesday the Guyana Cricket Board’s senior four day Inter County competition today on the grounds of the Demerara and Everest Cricket Clubs.
The same four teams that participated in the one-day ournament will again battle for honours in the longer format of the game as the players vie for places on the national team for the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional competition which is set to start in February.
Demerara won the senior 50 overs title on Tuesday and will seek to make a sweep of both the limited overs and longer formats.
They are scheduled to face Essequibo today at the Everest Cricket Club ground while Berbice will oppose the President’s XI at DCC, Queenstown.
Demerara dismissed Essequibo for a paltry score when they met in the shorter format, as Paul Wintz collected 6 for 26 to limit them to 92 all out.
Despite the low score, Demerara achieved the target with some difficulty, losing five wickets in the process.
Demerara’s squad features two changes as a result of injuries to Travis Dowlin and Ryan Ramdass.
The Malteenoes pair of Shaquille Williams and Kwame Crosse replaces them in the squad for the first game.
Essequibo had a disappointing run in the limited overs leg of the tournament, squandering winning positions, before finally consolidating on one by thrashing the President’s XI by 148 runs.
All rounders Ricardo and Anthony Adams have been exceptional performers for Essequibo while Dillon Heyliger smashed a half century and the Fredericks brothers Norman and Royan found late form in the one day tournament.
The President’s XI should fancy their chances against the Berbicians whom they defeated in the one day tournament.
They will again look to Tagenarine Chanderpaul who scored a half century against Berbice before becoming the first and only century maker in the one day competition when he scored an unbeaten 103 against Essequibo in the final match.
The Berbice bowling attack will include Keon Joseph, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai and rounder Clinton Pestano.
Pestano was Berbice’s star player in their only win of the limited overs leg of the Inter County tournament, with an aggressive half century, which dragged them out of the depths of being 5 down for 38 into a winning position. The President’s XI squad has lost seamer Joshua Wade, with Seon Daniels joining the squad as the other fast bowler.
He will partner Brandon Bess, who represented the West Indies in a solitary test match.
All matches begin at 10 a.m. and players will be cognisant of the fact that the tournament will be used to select the Regional 4 Day squad.
