Dear Editor,
Your editorial of January 12 (‘A perspective on bad news’) reflects I’m sure the view of many Guyanese, including those in the diaspora about bad news in the media, but as you mentioned this is common to most, if not all countries in the world today. There are natural disasters every week with some countries not fully recovered, eg the USA, which have visitations in other areas.
And there are wars and ethnic violence which we have got so accustomed to that we count the deaths on a daily basis, eg Syria, Mali, Pakistan, etc, not forgetting the gang rape in India which shocked the world and the beheading of a Sri Lankan maid in Saudi Arabia who was a juvenile when charged.
Lastly there is the flu epidemic in the USA which has reached an alarming level, and that is indeed bad news as we know when the USA sneezes who catches the cold or the virus.
However, there was recently good news which could at least have been carried on your front page rather than the back, to spare us the daily woes. And that was Guyana winning two nail-biting T20 cricket matches.
Nowadays I have my opinion that bad news will dominate good news, and I know that you will not entertain the source of such an opinion or conviction.
Yours faithfully,
V O Patrick
