A man accused of converting to his own use $40,000 given to him by a woman to purchase phone cards, was on Friday remanded to prison when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with fraud.
The allegation against Lewis Henry is that on December 31, 2012 at Bourda, being solely entrusted by Sonia Nurse with the sum of $40,000 to purchase phone cards, he fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit.
When Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry read the fraud charge to him, the accused initially pleaded guilty. However, when he was given a chance to speak, he told the court the he “got robbed of the money.” He also said that he works in the market and lives on the road.
On hearing this, the magistrate entered a plea of not guilty for the accused.
The prosecution then objected to bail on the grounds that Henry is a flight risk since he has no fixed place of abode.
The court then remanded him to prison and he was ordered to appear in Court Ten on February 18.
