Dear Editor,
It’s a new year so let each and every Guyanese at home and overseas see a clean Guyana by clearing all the piles of garbage, particularly in the city.
As I view the ever increasing build-up of rubbish, I am pushed to say that Guyana is like a baby who cannot clean its own mess, which is disgraceful after 47 years of independence.
The campaign ‘Pick it up Guyana’ obviously has not improved national sanitation much; it was a drop in the ocean. Guyana is a precious gift from God which we must cherish by making every effort to clean it thoroughly. It’s ours. After we have returned from abroad we speak about the clean streets of those countries and lament the filthy condition of ours. Instead we should emulate their example.
As we walk through the city streets early in the mornings the fresh atmosphere is polluted with the smell of garbage dumped on either side. Even more repulsive, is when you are about to dine at some eateries and rubbish can be seen just over the road. Lately, some citizens have begun to burn bags of garbage; maybe in preparation for a clean Mashramani. Cleanliness is an in indispensable component of human and national pride. Let us be proud and unite to rid our country of garbage so we can have a new outlook in this New Year.
Yours faithfully,
George Carrington
