A second half strike from the talented Jermel Holder in the 36th minute enabled a resolute Soesdyke Primary School to score a well-deserved upset victory over the much vaunted BV Primary as the Kashif and Shanghai Chico U13 Football tournament continued at the Georgetown Football Club on Sunday.
Played under the bright sunshine, proceedings began at a fast tempo with both teams wrestling for the early ascendency. BV Primary, through their midfield duo of Troy Adams and Omari Glasgow, started to find their attacking compass and started to dictate the exchanges.
A brilliant move from the diminutive Glasgow almost broke the deadlock but the resulting shot went wide much to the relief of the Soesdyke faithful.
Clearly under siege and living on the counter, the Soesdyke unit found an outlet through the burly Kevin Marshall, whose size, speed and direct runs posed dangerous threats to the East Coast unit. BV’s talented midfield dynamo Abrams almost scored on the stroke of halftime but was marginally off target as the lemon time whistle sounded.
The second half started in an open manner with Soesdyke throwing bodies forward at the insistence of their vocal fan base. The action waged back and forth much to the pleasure of the sizeable crowd who urged their respective camps on vociferously. Staunch defending by both teams stemmed the attacking input as the game took on a stretched nature. The tricky Holder constantly began to find space and toyed with the BV backline with his smooth moves and fancy footwork as Soesdyke began to find some attacking intent late into the affair. The deadlock was finally broken by Holder’s strike which sent the Soesdyke mass into frenzied ecstasy. BV Primary, stunned by the resilience of their antagonists desperately tried to find parity only to be negated by determined Soesdyke defending. The encounter was finally over as the closing whistle sounded, sending the Soesdyke mass into wild celebrations.
In the opening fixture, Company Road Primary overcame a dogged St. Gabriel’s Primary 1-0 in penalty shootout.
Yamani Armstrong was the successful penalty striker.
Neither team was able to score during regulation time. In the day’s other match, Grove Primary defeated West Ruimveldt Primary 1-0 in sudden death shoot out. Alwyn Haynes was the goal scorer.
