A firefighter was yesterday charged with unlawfully assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
The allegation against Curtis Pollys is that on December 8, 2012, at Water Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Katina Trim.
Pollys, 29, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Attorney Patrice Henry, who represented Polly, in his bail application, told the court that his client and the defendant once shared a relationship but have since severed ties.
He said that his client is a firefighter, who boasts an impeccable record and poses no risk of flight.
The lawyer further related that on the day in question, Trim went to his client’s place of work and attacked him, which forced him to “strenuously defend himself.” According to Henry, because Pollys defended himself, Trim became annoyed and reported the matter to the police.
But Trim, when given a chance to relate her side of the story, told the court that she had earlier left work when Pollys approached her enquiring which taxi carries her home at nights. She said she told him it is a taxi that she can rely on to take her home every night for $500, since she usually gets off late from work. She said that after explaining this to Pollys, he dealt her a slap.
The prosecution had no objections to Henry’s bail application and it was granted in the sum of $20,000.
Henry, however, requested a reduction in the bail amount, stressing that the young man would be unable to afford the sum ordered by the court. The presiding magistrate acceded to Henry’s request and bail was reduced to $18,000.
Their case will be called again on February 22.
