(Trinidad Express) A 28-year-old Guyanese national with no known enemies was gunned down outside his Freeport apartment on Tuesday.
Tyron Emmanuel Achaia, of Arena Road, worked as a supervisor at the Highway to Heaven Restaurant and Bar, located along the south-bound lane of Solomon Hochoy Highway, Freeport.
His co-worker, Vishan Maharaj, said Achaia left the workplace at around 9.30 p.m.
Maharaj said “He had a suitcase with him. No one knew what was in the suitcase. He seemed normal, but he was in a hurry to go home. He had a few drinks and left.”
Achaia’s landlord, Gangapersad Ramesar, said, “My wife brought him (Achaia) home, and he went up the road by my sister’s house where he used to stay sometimes. He said he was going to wash clothes and came back after 10 o’clock. I was inside the bedroom when my daughter-in-law run inside and said she heard him bawl out and something like a gunshot”.
Ramesar said, “I came out and saw him lying on his belly, and he got shot in his chest. He was already dead. The suitcase was in the yard. It was full of clothes.”
Ramesar said a gold ID band, two gold rings, a cellphone and wallet were still on Achaia when he was found.
Neighbours said they saw a black Corolla leaving the scene after the gunshot was heard.
Achaia was not married and had no children. Achaia, Ramesar said, had travelled to Guyana twice over the Christmas holiday to visit relatives.
The dead man’s cousin, Shafeek Ally, 31, said he and Achaia lived in Mon Repos, East Coast, Demerara, Guyana, and both came to Trinidad six years ago on vacation. Ally said he returned to Guyana, while Achaia remained in Trinidad.
Sergeant Andy Mohammed of the Freeport Police Station is investigating.
