New Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Limin on Tuesday paid his first visit to the Office of Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best, during which the two took the opportunity to sign a protocol for the delivery of 5 Million RMB (approximately US$80,000) in military equipment to the Guyana Defence Force, a press release from the army said.
The agreement for the military aid was signed in 2011. Among the items to be provided to the GDF are a field ambulance, aluminum boats and metal detectors.
In addressing the relationship between the People’s Liberation Army and the GDF, Commodore Best said that ties have intensified and that the aid received from China continues to be important for the development of the Force. He pointed to various training opportunities for ranks as well as the provision of non-lethal military equipment to the GDF, as two of the many examples of this support.
Ambassador Limin, in response, praised Guyana for being one of the first in South America to have established close military bonds with China. He said that the Chinese government attached great importance to its relationship with the GDF.
