A labourer was sentenced to five years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter and larceny yesterday at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus imposed the sentence on Tage Singh, of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, who admitted that on Monday, between 7 am and 4 pm, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Harry James, also of Zeelugt.
Singh admitted to carting off a bottle of gas along with a quantity of household articles, valued $74,000.
When the magistrate asked Singh, a known offender, how much time he wanted in jail, he said one year. Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus, however, handed him the five-year sentence instead.
Last year, Singh was sentenced to six months for simple larceny and he had previously served a three-year sentence for a similar offence.
