An incinerator to tackle solid waste was on Saturday commissioned by the Ministry of Natural Resources at Itaballi Landing (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).
The Government Informa-tion Agency said that the incinerator was commissioned in the presence of Minister of Natural Re-sources and the Environment Robert Persaud, officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and Region Seven Chairman Gordon Bradford.
Manager of GGMC’s Environmental Division, Wendell Alleyne said the incinerator would help to deal with garbage left by those who transit the community on their way in and out of the interior mining areas, GINA reported.
Bradford said, “No effort is too small or large when it comes to dealing with environmental waste because I always use the phrase, if we don’t take care of the environment there will come a time when the environment won’t be able to take care of us”.
Bradford added that the nearby health centre will also utilise the $760,000 incinerator.
Persaud, in his remarks said the issue of waste disposal in mining communities must be given serious attention. “We can’t just leave it up to the regions.”
The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry has invested approximately $30M dollars to enhance waste management in communities as part of wider efforts through the “Pick it Up Guyana” campaign, GINA added.
Several bins were also presented to the community, and these will be placed in strategic locations throughout the community.
