A father of 12 was yesterday granted $30,000 bail after he denied a break-and-enter-and-larceny charge when he appeared before Magistrate Alan Wilson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Marsalis Gladstone, 49, is that between January 12 and 14, he broke and entered the storeroom of Jailall Kissoon and stole a wheel barrow, three hammers, a handsaw, 10 sacks of cement and other items, all totalling $76,800.
The items were the property of Ram Singh.
Gladstone was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented the accused, told the court that his client did not steal the articles.
He said that Gladstone buys and sells construction materials and had bought a hand plane from the virtual; complainant (VC) to resell. He said that after the VC noticed that the other items mentioned in the charge were allegedly missing, he maliciously blamed his client.
Fung-a-Fat, in his application for bail, further said that his client is not a flight risk and has a permanent address at North Ruimveldt.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail, citing the nature of the offence and the punishment it attracts if the defendant is found guilty.
The magistrate after listening to submissions on both sides, however, granted bail and adjourned the case until January 30.
