Two men were on Sunday evening pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre after the car they were travelling in lost control and toppled numerous times at the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
Dead are Saphraz Ali, 33, of Lot 63 Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara and Joel Mohammed, 50, of Dora, Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
Police said that about 20:30 hrs on Sunday, at the Long Creek Public Road, Ali was driving his motor car HB 6611 when he reportedly lost control. The car toppled several times before it came to a stop in the corner.
Ali and Mohamed were both rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where they later succumbed to their injuries.
When Stabroek News visited the home of Ali, relatives and friends were gathered preparing for a wake, while his wife Cheryl-Ann Ali, who is five months pregnant with the couple’s third child was inconsolable.
Ali’s sister, Zubeda Ali, said she received a call from a cousin around 8.30 pm on Sunday, inquiring if Ali had been involved in an accident. She said she was unaware up until then, so she called her brother’s phone and another cousin answered and confirmed her suspicion.
Zubeda Ali said she rushed to the crash site where she saw her brother in the back seat of his vehicle. She said the other occupant was not in the vehicle and she believes he might have been thrown out while it was toppling.
She said her brother left home around 8.30 am on Sunday and headed to the Soesdyke Junction where he worked as a taxi driver transporting persons to nearby villages.
She said that Ali’s daughter has not slept since she received the news of her father’s demise, while his son did not understand that his father would not return.
Ali was remembered as a devout Muslim and a joyful person who would always go out of the way for his family.
Meanwhile, a niece of Mohamed, who provided her name as Gloria, said she received a call from a cousin who was passing at the time, notifying her that he died in an accident.
Gloria said she was made to understand that her uncle was heading to Georgetown when the accident occurred. She said she last spoke to her uncle one month ago when she visited Dora.
The police have since launched an investigation into the accident.
