A 13-year-old Dolphin Secondary School student was yesterday stabbed in his abdomen and upper back during a scuffle with another student, who is now in police custody.
Second Form-level student Shane Hachette is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital, after being stabbed with what was described as a “seamstress’ scissors” around midday yesterday in front of the entrance to the school.
The weapon, described as being six to seven inches in length, was said to have punctured one of his lungs. A family member related that Hachette has to undergo surgery to repair the damaged lung.
His assailant, who is also 13, was in custody at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost up to last night.
A student told Stabroek News that around lunch time yesterday, Hachette was leaving the school compound when he was approached by his assailant, who started to shove him a number of times.
The student said a fight broke out between the two, which resulted in Hachette falling to the ground and the other male pulling out the scissors from his waist and stabbing him in his stomach and in his upper back.
Hachette was left on the ground covered in blood for about 30 minutes before he was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, this newspaper was told, since there was trouble getting a vehicle to transport him there.
Another eyewitness said that the two had an argument a week before yesterday’s altercation but it was resolved after they were both taken to the school’s headmistress.
Another student said that after the stabbing, Hachette’s assailant escaped from the scene but he was later caught.
When Stabroek News contacted Donna Hachette, she said her son complained about being insulted about his sister and her on a number of occasions.
Hachette said that she learned that the two had a fight the week before but was unable to say if it may have fuelled yesterday’s stabbing.
When this newspaper visited the headmistress of the school for a comment about the attack, she denied any knowledge of the stabbing and advised that the Ministry of Education be contacted.
An official from the Ministry of Education said that it is aware of the stabbing and that a full investigation into the matter has been launched.
