Mark Austin is talking up a storm ahead of his bout on Friday against Gladwin Dorway for the junior middleweight title of Guyana when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) hosts its first Guyana Fight Night card for 2013 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Austin, in an exclusive interview with Stabroek Sport, said he was fully prepared for Dorway whom he described as an inexperienced fighter.
“He is like a walkover to me. I will teach him a little manners when I get in the ring. If nobody beat him before, I will be the first to beat him,” he said confidently.
Dorway is unbeaten after four fights winning all four by technical knockouts. His last bout was against Shawn Pile at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on December 28 and he won by a TKO in the second round of the scheduled six round contest. Asked how different Dorway is from the likes of Iwan Azore and Troy Lewis, Austin said very different. “I see him as somebody who now start. He only has four fights. I am the person going up with the more experience and I don’t care who he is. Coachman bring me up one way, which is don’t be afraid of anybody and I am going out there to kill.”
Austin, who has won eight bouts, lost five and drawn one, said that fighting Dorway was a step in the right direction as it puts him closer to shot for the CABOFE title.
Austin said this is the first occasion that he has come this close to getting a shot at the title and plans to do his best to secure the win.
Austin’s coach, George ‘Canchie’ Oprecht, was just as confident as his charge suggesting that he was not sure that Dorway could make it past the fourth round.
“Dorway is no problem for Mark, after four rounds I don’t know what he will do,” he said.
Oprecht said the bout will be Austin’s fourth 12 round fight (actually it will be his third) and according to him, he knows how to hold his own during those fights. He also said that once Austin can beat Azore then he can definitely beat Dorway.
Meanwhile, the much talked about catch weight fight between Barbadian Shawn Cox and Kwesi Jones is off. The two were to cuff it out on Friday.
Stabroek Sport was informed that Cox’s manager Sam Layne called off the fight due to a lack of sponsorship to get the Bajan fighter here.
Up to last week Layne gave local boxing authorities the assurance that Cox would be in Guyana to face Jones who was eagerly awaiting him. Cox was looking to redeem himself after losing to Russian Denis Lebedev in April of last year, two months after knocking out former World Champion and Guyanese, Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite in the first round.
