The Ministry of Health has provided two wheelchairs to the Periwinkle Cancer Club, a release from the Government Information Agency said yesterday.
The handing over ceremony took place on Wednesday in the compound of the Ministry of Health on Brickdam.
The wheelchairs along with walking aids were handed over by Minister of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran to Chairperson of the club’s Welfare Sub-committee Nurse Penelope Layne.
GINA said that Ramsaran reiterated that cervical cancer is still a problem in Guyana but that significant work has been done over the years to create awareness of the disease.
According to Minister Ramsaran, VIA screening has proven to be very confidential and effective for an environment like Guyana and can be done anywhere in the country.
GINA said that the Periwinkle Club has joined the Ministry of Health to fight cervical cancer and four outreach programmes to create awareness of the illness have already been held.
Layne thanked the Minister of Health for donating the two wheelchairs, and for supporting the cancer victims.
