A teenager was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail after he was charged with stealing a gold chain when he made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on January 12 at Quamina Street, Shaquille Wilson, 19, stole a gold chain with pendant and diamond valued at $600,000 from Anthony Perez.
The young man pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Police prosecutor Kerry Bostwick in relating the facts of the matter told the court that on the day in question at about 11:15 hrs the virtual complainant was riding his motorcycle and had his gold chain around his neck. He said that the defendant approached him and snatched the chain.
Bostwick said Wilson was arrested and was positively identified as the individual who carried out the act and a statement was taken from him.
Wilson’s attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat in his bail application told the court that his client is not a flight risk since he resides at 56 James Street, Albouystown. He said that he was never placed on an identification (ID) parade and that he never gave a statement to the police.
Bostwick objected to bail citing the nature of the offence and the punishment it attracts. He also pointed out the value of the article. However, he asked the magistrate that if bail is to be granted it should be in a substantial amount.
The presiding magistrate after listening to submissions from counsel and the prosecution granted the defendant bail in the sum of $100,000 and he was also told report to the Brickdam police station every Friday at 08:00 hrs.
He was asked to lodge all travel documents with the police.
His matter will be called again on February 22.
