The struggle continues for a ‘rape free’ society

Dear Editor,

A ‘rape free’ society is desired by all women and girls in the 21st century. The struggle continues for women who are fighting tooth and nail to have their rights recognized as human rights.  Every woman has a right to decide in a ‘rape free’ society! It is an inalienable right; that right is enshrined in the CEDAW convention, ie, the convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women.  Rape is discrimination against women and girls by the men who perpetrate the act. The mayhem being occasioned upon women and girls is wholly repugnant and downright disgusting. Stabroek News on January 15 reported that a schoolgirl fought off her would-be attacker who brandished a knife at her in an attempt to subdue her, but this young girl fought like a tigress and she was victorious.

Women the world over will have to continue to ‘Get up and stand up for their rights, and never give up the fight,’ as articulated by reggae legend Bob Marley. It is only when women stand up for their rights, that those rights will be enacted and respected.  The struggle continues for a ‘rape free’ society here in Guyana.

Yours faithfully,
