Accused in teen’s stabbing death committed to face trial

Samuel Cornelius was yesterday committed to stand trial for the murder of 17-year-old Anfernee Bowman, who he was accused of fatally stabbing in an altercation when they were leaving math lessons last year.

At the end of a preliminary inquiry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Magistrate Judy Latchman found that a prima facie case was made out against Cornelius, 18, and committed him to stand trial in the High Court for the murder.

When given the chance to speak by the court, Cornelius stated that he will reserve his defence as well as his witnesses for the High Court.

The allegation against Cornelius was that on February 27, 2012, at Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, he murdered Bowman.

It was alleged that around 6:25pm, both Bowman and Cornelius were leaving their math lessons when they became involved in an altercation outside of the premises.

A scuffle ensued between them and Bowman suffered several puncture wounds to his upper body, two of which penetrated his heart. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt, in his closing statement, noted that a prima face case had been made against the accused. Bowman’s death, he said, was caused by the accused under circumstances which made his actions unlawful.

Attorney Mark Waldron, who represented Cornelius, maintained that his client defended himself on the day of the incident.
