Four persons were each placed on $60,000 bail yesterday on the charge that they maliciously damaged a car belonging to a civil engineer, who was himself put on bail for assault and threat charges.
It was alleged that on January 18, at Waterloo Street, Paula David, Taku Outar, Seekram Nanram and Mahendra Outar maliciously damaged a rear windshield, valued at $105,768, a rear-view mirror, valued at $14,463 and other items on the car, all totalling $302,872 and property of Charles Sobers.
They all pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.
Nanram and Mahendra Outar were also charged with assaulting Sobers, which they denied. Sobers, meanwhile, was charged with assaulting both Outars and threatening David.
Magistrate Leron Daly dealt with the cases at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
David, 32, of 46 Evans Street, Charlestown, was represented by attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, while her three co-accused were unrepresented.
Fung-a-Fat, who asked that his client be granted bail in a reasonable sum, told the court that she has a five-year-old child with Sobers. He added that Sobers was facing charges of inflicting grievous bodily harm on her.
Police prosecutor Venetta Pindar had no objections to them being granted bail, which was later set at $60,000 each.
Meanwhile, it was alleged that Nanram and Mahendra Outar assaulted Sobers at separate places on January 18. It was alleged that Nanram assaulted him at Waterloo Street and that Outar assaulted him at Kitty. Pindar had no objections to the men being granted their pre-trial liberty on these charges and they were released on self-bail.
Sobers was also charged with two counts of unlawful assault and one count of threatening language.
The court heard that on January 18, at Waterloo Street, he unlawfully assaulted the Outars. It is also alleged that on January 18, at Kitty, he made use of threatening language to David.
Sobers’ attorney told the court that his client posed no risk of flight, while noting that he resides at Prashad Nagar and was gainfully employed as a civil engineer at Cummings Electrical. He is also a father of a child.
Pindar did not object to Sobers being granted bail, which was subsequently set at $20,000 on each of the assault charges and $10,000 on the threatening language charge.
The cases will be called again on February 26.
