Theresa London and Akisha Arokium will travel to the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow where they will compete in the Trinidad National Open Boxing Championship.
Terrence Poole, Technical Director of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) in an interview with Stabroek Sport said the two were selected to represent Guyana since they are the two best female boxers at the amateur level.
“Actually is about the best talent we have among females in Guyana, Akisha Arokium and Theresa London. Theresa London was knocking on the door a long while because she should have gone to Turkey for the World Junior Championship but there was a setback in terms of the registration, so she and Caroline Bess who is out of boxing at present should have gone.”
According to Poole, London has tremendous potential which could see her going a far way in the sport.
“We saw the ability from Akisha coming from Berbice and right away you recognized that there was potential in her, so I think both of them will give a good account of themselves in Trinidad.”
Seventeen-year-old London, no stranger to boxing being the daughter of Pamela London and niece of Pauline London, said she started boxing some three years ago.
She said that while she thought of taking up the sport, her mother was instrumental in her starting earlier than usual.
“I used to be fighting in school every day so my mother told me that she will put me to box because something has to make me stop fighting in school.”
Eventually she said her love for the sport grew and according to her, she believes that she will make boxing her career like her mother and aunt did.
Arokium, like London, said she hopes to make boxing her career. The fifteen-year-old Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary School student said she started boxing two years ago after being introduced to the sport by a friend.
London has an unblemished record of nine wins to her name which includes two knockouts while Arokium has six fights with two losses.
Both fighters said they plan to give of their best while in the Twin Island Republic thus making their coaches, family and Guyana proud.
