National captain Veerasammy Permaul showed signs of shaking off a lean patch by taking a five-wicket haul on the first day of a warm up match at the Everest Cricket Club ground between the National Team preparing for the Regional Four-Day competition and a team of reserve players at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.
The national team batted first and lost first time selectee Tagenarine Chanderpaul who had his stumps disturbed by pacer Brandon Bess without scoring.
Apart from 39 from 83 balls by Rajendra Chandrika, none of the batsmen contributed significantly as Guyana were bowled out for 144 in 53.4 overs.
Left-arm spinner Anthony Adams bagged 5-37 in 11.4 overs for the Reserve XI while fast bowler Brandon Bess took 2-16.
Permaul had his first four wickets lbw and his victims were Richard Ramdeen, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Rajiv Ivan and Ricardo Adams. He claimed his fifth victim when Delbert Hicks holed out to long on after striking a four in the same region earlier in the over. Hicks’ departure reduced the Reserve XI to a dismal 84/8 after 23 overs.
The Reserve XI closed on 98/8 in 29 overs, and Permaul has so far taken 5-23 from 11 overs. Fast bowler Ronsford Beaten picked up 2-15 from five overs while Paul Wintz picked up the wicket of Sewnarine Chattergoon in his only over. Royston Crandon remains not out on 18. The match resumes today at 10 a.m.
