Wendell Austin, who was allegedly seen by a policeman committing a robbery, was yesterday granted bail after saying he was out of town at the time of the attack.
Austin, 20, of Tucville Housing Scheme, was charged with robbery with aggravation when he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
He was released on $85,000 bail.
It is alleged that on January 24, at Georgetown, Austin and others robbed Marco Antonio Valasco Fernandes of a cellular phone and cash, totalling $32,000.
Police prosecutor Denise Booker told the court that Austin was in the company of others, when they saw Fernandes and robbed him in a passageway.
She noted that a police officer witnessed the act being committed by Austin while the others made good their escape. She further stated that the accused was pointed out as one of the men who robbed Fernandes.
But when given the chance to speak, Austin said that he knew nothing about the crime.
“Yuh Worship, I was in Diamond lockup four days without food for something I don’t even know about. I was out of town on the day…,” Austin noted. He also said that he was held in police custody for four day without food.
When asked by the magistrate if he had any prior matter before the court, Austin said he was charged with breaking and entering in 2011.
The magistrate subsequently set bail at $85,000 and adjourned the case to February 27, when it will be called in Court One.
