Dear Editor,
On behalf of the residents of Bartica and its environs, the parents, wives, children and other relatives would like to thank the maritime department (MARAD), the police, miners, owners of boats and persons who braved the rapids and the Mazaruni River around Crab Falls to recover the bodies of those who worked in the mining sector. We all join in thanking you for a job well done.
Special thanks go to Mr Tennant of MARAD and the regional administration of Region 7. We look forward to seeing a maritime office established here in Bartica as well as in the Pomeroon, where a responsible person could check on overloaded boats, the certification of captains and on every passenger and crew member.
Everyone should wear a lifejacket. If all those persons who drowned had been wearing a proper lifevest they would have been saved or at least found earlier. Let this be a lesson to all boaters.
Once again, thanks MARAD.
Yours faithfully,
Winston Miller Snr
