A 41-year-old motorcyclist was killed yesterday afternoon when he reportedly slammed head-on into a car after swerving from a child who was attempting to cross the road at Samatha Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara.
Gopaul Rajcoomar called ‘Sonny’ of Lot 304 Section A Block Y, Grove, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. He sustained massive head injuries and reportedly broke his neck during the collision.
The driver of the car, Stabroek News was told, was taken into police custody shortly after the accident.
When this newspaper arrived at the hospital, relatives and friends of the father of four wept bitterly as his body was being lifted into a hearse. The body was later transported to the Lyken’s Funeral Home in the city and a post-mortem examination is expected to be done tomorrow.
The man’s reputed wife Nandanie Fredericks told this newspaper between sobs that he left home around 9 am saying he was going to get an evaluation officer to look at a property he has in Samatha Point. She said Rajcoomar wanted to go and remove all his belongings from the property and though she pleaded with him to leave them, he ignored her.
She said their landlady, Vanessa Singh, contacted her with news that Rajcoomar had been in an accident. Sobbing, she recalled that she then tried to contact her husband. “I callin, callin and nobody ain’t answering the phone,” she said, adding that she then decided to go to the hospital.
Singh said she had received a phone call around 5.30 pm from someone who asked if she had heard from Rajcoomar for the day. When she responded in negative, the caller told her that he had been involved in an accident and was dead.
The woman said that she later confirmed the death with someone at the hospital.
Rajcoomar’s youngest child is five months old.
