Farmers at Canal Number Two Polder say drainage works in the main canal have yet to be completed yet the workers have been paid in full.
The farmers were speaking during a meeting with Minister within the Agriculture Ministry, Alli Baksh, on Thursday.
A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said the meeting was one of several community outreaches planned for officials to interact with residents to address issues affecting their livelihoods.
Baksh who was accompanied by officers of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) instructed the officers to document and inspect works before making payments. He also said that workers should be made to sign off on the works on their completion, in order to ensure accountability. The minister also committed to laying these issues before Cabinet so that methods can be implemented to prevent a recurrence of this fraud.
The meeting was held at the Endeavour Primary School. GINA also said that the minister recently held outreach exercises in Region Two to determine the water pressure in the community which had been experiencing a dry spell.
