Dear Editor,
There was not that great euphoria, that sense of something stupendous as President Barack Obama was sworn in on January 21, 2013, Martin Luther King Day, as there was in 2009. That day our hearts overflowed with emotions so intense − relief, thanksgiving, sheer joy. As we saw Jesse Jackson’s tears, as our eyes too filled with tears we exulted and shared the great dream. That day, America’s first African-American President was sworn in.
Yet this day, January 21, 2013, Martin Luther King Day heralds for me the beginning of the true fulfilment of that great dream. This day, President Barack Obama, not African-American President Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term. Time to celebrate indeed.
Yours faithfully,
Joan Collins
