Roraima Bikers Club’s Warren `Forty’ Mc Kay made a successful defence of his National Sports Commission (NSC) sponsored Mashramani 40-mile road race yesterday winning the event in a time of one hour, 40 minutes and 36 seconds.
Mc Kay’s winning time bettered the one hour, 44 minutes and 15 seconds with which he won last year’s event.
The race, which commenced at the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, saw the cyclists travelling to Bushy Park, Parika before returning to the starting point for the finish.
Second place went to Team Coco’s Raul Leal with Linden’s Orville Hinds third. Hinds’ fellow Lindeners Rastaff O’Selmo and Akeem Arthur were fourth and fifth respectively while another Team Coco rider, Paul De Nobrega rounded out the top six.
Mc Kay and De Nobrega grabbed two prime prizes each while there was one each for Hinds, O’ Selmo, Arthur, Leal, Junior Niles and Alonso Ambrose.
Leal and De Nobrega placed first and second respectively in the junior division while Niles topped Steven Fernandes in the veterans’ division and Naomi Singh received a special prize for being the first female finisher.
The top cyclists will be in action again on Saturday when organizer Hassan Mohammed stages the 21st annual R&R 11-race meet in the National Park.
