A labourer was yesterday fined $3,000 and ordered to do six months community service after he admitted to having two grammes of cannabis in his possession.
Lloyd Caesar pleaded guilty to a possession of narcotics charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Caesar, of Albouystown, admitted that on February 1, at America Street, he had in his possession two grammes of cannabis.
Caesar explained that he was at America Street helping his aunt when his friend approached him with the substance to smoke it. He further stated that at the time, police ranks that were patrolling the street approached and asked him about the “pack” in his hand and he gave them an explanation. He claimed that the police officers grabbed him and started to assault him.
When asked by the magistrate if he had resisted arrest, Caesar said no.
The magistrate ordered Caesar to pay a $3,000 fine and to do six months community service at Brickdam Police Station and she also asked that the prosecution to investigate Caesar’s claim that he was assaulted.
