A young man was yesterday placed on three years’ probation after he admitted stealing a pair of boxers from a store where he worked because they did not pay him.
Carl Melville, 20, admitted to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that on February 1, he stole the pair of boxers, valued $1,000, from Rani’s Fashion on Charlotte Street, Georgetown.
Melville, who was unrepresented by counsel, also offered an explanation for his actions with his plea.
The young man, who appeared very confused when the charge was being read to him, told the court that he worked at the store and they never paid him his salary. As a result, he stole the underwear.
Melville’s uncle, who noted that his nephew’s mother is deceased while his father lives in St Maarten, told the court that it was the young man’s first offence.
After listening to the submissions, the magistrate placed Melville on three years’ probation and told him that he has be a part of the Skills and Knowledge for Youth Empowerment (SKYE) project. She also warned him that if he is not on good behaviour throughout his probation, he could be brought back to the court for sentencing.
