A woman was yesterday charged with assaulting her husband’s ex-wife, whom she accused of gossiping about her.
Amanda Khan, 21, was released on self bail and placed on a bond to keep the peace after she pleaded not guilty to an assault charge read to her by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Khan, of Lot 1 Public Road, La Penitence, is that on February 1, at Smyth Street, she assaulted Bibi Abraham.
Police Prosecutor Burgett Grant said that on the day in question, Khan was in her husband’s vehicle driving along Smyth Street when she spotted Abraham and accused her of gossiping about her.
Grant further stated that Khan got out of the vehicle and grabbed Abraham by her Khimar several times. The matter was reported at Brickdam Police Station and Khan was later arrested and charged.
Her lawyer asked the court for reasonable bail, while claiming that he was unsure if Abraham wanted to continue with matter due to her absence from court.
Further, in the light of Abraham’s absence, he asked that the court dismiss the case.
The magistrate, however, refused the lawyer’s request for a dismissal. Since the prosecution had no objection to the defendant being admitted to bail, she placed Khan on self bail and put her on a bond to keep the peace.
The matter will continue on March 1.
