Dear Editor,
Generally politics in Guyana is always good, but probably because of some ideological or other differences between the ruling administration and opposition parties – past and present – relative to issues, policies and plans, progress becomes like a pendulum which swings to and fro, and in the end the country remains in the same position. Blame-shifting and scape-goating are a part of local politics irrespective of party affiliation. We see many interesting headlines but less corresponding headways.
Guyana has numerous natural resources, tapped and un-tapped, which give us the long legs of a giraffe. Therefore our country should be making wider strides or leaps and bounds along the distant road to national development. But the hindering factors lie in the negative behaviour of some politicians, whether they are parliamentarians or not.
Political competitiveness is beneficial; it brings out the best and even the excellence in our politicians. However, when this used to score personal points, it deflects them from their contribution to national development. Other politically related problems are, for example one might have the ability but not the facility, while the other has the facility but not the ability, and is given the job or post. This hinders efficiency.
All these negative factors contribute to keeping the pendulum oscillating forward and backward, to and fro, as the country is deciding the way forward or in which direction to go. Meanwhile, time keeps ticking away on Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
George Carrington
