The President, executives and members of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) have are congratulating Christopher Barnwell on his selection to represent the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2013 Indian Premier League.
According to a press release, Barnwell, who started playing cricket for DCC at age 14, is the only Guyanese to be selected in this year’s Indian Premier League.
Coming on the heels of his superb all round performance for Guyana in the just concluded Caribbean T20 competition, his quick auction was no surprise and is testimony to his hard work and commitment, the DCC said. The pugnacious hitter of the ball, medium fast bowler and emerging West Indian player was also recently named Vice Captain of the Guyana Regional 50 Overs team.
DCC President Alfred Mentore welcomes the news of Barnwell’s selection and notes that it’s very encouraging to see the Guyanese cricketers excelling despite the problems being experienced locally, the release said. He added that he expects Barnwell to remain grounded, committed and dedicated despite the signing by the Indian Premier League.
The club said Mentore urged Barnwell to continue doing the same things that got him there in the first place and to remain committed to Guyana and West Indies cricket. He also said he hopes Barnwell’s selection will motivate and energise the other talented and dedicated young cricketers not only at DCC, but also from the other cricket clubs in Guyana.
Barnwell joins a long list of DCC players who have played for Guyana and the West Indies, including the legendary Clive Lloyd.
