Milerock Football Club of Linden scored a comfortable 2-0 win over recently crowned Kashif and Shanghai champions Buxton United in an entertaining match up when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League resumed Sunday with three matches.
The Linden side had Buxton United on the rope from the opening whistle with a relentless attack in the match played at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground of the East Coast of Demerara.
Nippy striker Joel McKinnon scored with an excellent header in the 51st minute while Clarence Huggins converted a penalty kick in the 72nd as Milerock who were lying at the bottom of the points table lifted their game against the hapless Buxton side.
Buxton United playing without three of their seasoned players had only themselves to blame for not capitalizing on an early opportunity when one of their players was fouled in the penalty area in the 22nd minute.
The ensuing penalty kick by Clive Andries was squandered when he placed the ball directly to Milerock’s goalkeeper who had no difficulty collecting.
Reduced to 10 players after their defender Akeem Greene was given a red card for the infringement, Milerock kept their composure and continued their attack on the home side throughout the first half but at the end of the first half the score remained 0-0.
Second half substitute McKinnon injected more firepower to Milerock’s attack and found the back of the net with a header from a free kick after he was unmarked on the far post.
Buxton picked up their game midway in the second half with several positive runs but they failed to convert.
Huggins then scored from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box to put the issue beyond doubt.
Buxton made a few substitutions but they lacked the fire to fight back and later were also reduced to 10 players when Troy Lewis was given marching orders by the referee almost of the sound of the final whistle.
In the other game at the BV ground, East Coast side BV/Triumph United and Dem Amstel Porknockers battled to a 1-1 draw.
Delroy Deen had sent BV/Triumph into the lead in the 4th minute but Den Amstel bounced back to equalize in the 44th minute through Rodwell Hutson.
The other fixture between BCC Rosignol United and Uitvlugt Warriors ended in a scoreless draw at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.
