Former Chancellor of the Judiciary Aubrey Bishop died on Wednesday night at the Georgetown Hospital, after suffering from a brief illness.
He was 81.
Bishop was a law professor at the University of Guyana, where he had been lecturing for the past 27 years. He attended Queen’s College for his secondary education and was called to the English Bar in July 1963, after which he returned home to practice law.
During his career, Professor Bishop became Chief Justice in 1992 and then he held the position of Chancellor of the Judiciary in 1996. He was also the Vice President of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas and a FIFA International Soccer Referee.
He was also honoured with the Cacique’s Crown of Honour, and the Order of Roraima, Guyana’s third and second highest awards, respectively. He leaves to mourn his wife, Dr Carole Maison-Bishop, and their three children.
