Dear Editor,
Many, if not most of us encounter persons in our walks of life who make an indelible impression on us either positive, negative or both, and whom our ‘delete’ memory button cannot erase. One such person was Winston de Harte, whom I learnt passed away recently.
I first met him when I returned from the UK to work with the Booker Group of Companies at the BG Lithographic. He was a shop steward for the Printing & Allied Workers Union under then president, Edward Marcus. He had a warm smile which never seemed to leave his face, and even though we would disagree at times, we would eventually agree to disagree. He never displayed anger. It was respect for each other. But there is another side of Winston that some may have forgotten: He was a football player and became a national goalkeeper.
Today with just a few Lithonians standing − some in the Diaspora − I bid him adieu on their behalf, and to his sorrowing relatives pray, may his soul rest in peace.
Yours faithfully,
V O Patrick
