Clive ‘The Punisher” Atwell could land a shot at competing at the World Boxing Council (WBC) World Cup in June of this year if he manages to get past Venezuelan Rafael Hernandez.
Atwell and Hernandez will duke it out on March 30 and negotiations are in place to have the fight held in Guyana a release from President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool states. Atwell’s chance came in the featherweight division as CABOFE Champion Salvador Sanchez was knocked out in his last bout and can no longer represent the federation creating a tremendous opportunity for young Atwell who has developed a respectable record on Guyana Fight Night of 11 fights 10 wins (5 KOs) and 1 draw.
The WBC has mandated and approved a final elimination bout for the CABOFE title to be fought between Atwell and Rafael Hernandez.
Hernandez’s record is 21 fights (15 wins – 13 KOs), 3 losses and 2 draws.
Atwell, the reigning CABOFE super lightweight champion and Guyana’s lightweight champion will need to defeat Hernandez to get into the lucrative competition.
Reached for comment, Abdool said they have confidence in Atwell’s ability to overcome his Venezuelan counterpart and secure his place in the WBC World Cup.
He added that the WBC, in signing off on the fight, had recommended that international judges be appointed to quell any mistrust on either side. Meanwhile, Guyanese Simeon “Candy Man” Hardy will be representing the Caribbean Boxing Federation in the welterweight division (147 lbs). Hardy has a record of 10 fights which includes seven knockouts.
