Roraima Bikers Cycle Club’s Alonso Greaves yesterday outsprinted Raynauth Jeffrey to win the feature event of the 22nd R&R International nine race programme in the National Park organized by national cycling coach Hassan Mohammed.
Greaves won the event in a record time of one hour, 15 minutes and 43 seconds erasing the old mark of one hour, 16 minutes and 14 seconds set by Robin Persaud.
Paul De Nobrega, Junior Niles, Geron Williams and Alex Mendes occupied the other top positions.
Jeffrey grabbed four of the eight prime prizes while Williams, Niles, Jude Bentley and John Charles shared the other four equally.
Some 30 cyclists faced the starter.
Rashidi Ceres won the opening event, the BMX 9-12 years-old category from Jamal Arthur and Shawn Grannum while Raphael Leung won the BMX 12-14 years category from Keon Harris and Britton John.
Isaiah Sahadeo won the BMX 6-9 years category from Jeremiah Hamson and Ken Sahadeo, while Alfie Khan captured the 12-14 years BMX boys and girls’ event away from Ramalho Crawford and Jason Jordan.
Mikhail Diaz was the winner of the BMX Open event from Adrian Sharma and Jamal John respectively.
Junior Niles won the veteran’s Under-50 five lap event in 13m: 21secs from Wilfred Benjamin and Kennard Lovell while the veteran’s Over-50 category was won by Virgil Jones with Kenneth Moore and Lancelot Rose second and third respectively.
Maurice Fagundes was the winner of the veterans Over-60 event.
Ozia MacAulay won the Mountain Bike trail event from Stephanoo Husbands and Julio Melville while Linden’s Akeem Arthur’s triumphed in the Junior/Juvenile 10-lap event.
His winning time was 23 minutes, 29secs.
Raul Leal and Montel Anthony were second and third respectively while Mario King took both sprint prizes.
The cyclists will today compete in the PNC/Reform organized LFS Burnham Memorial race, which will for the first time be held over two stages this year.
This morning from 07:00hrs, they will pedal off from Homestretch Avenue to Land of Canaan and back to the place of origin for the finish, while this afternoon from 14:00hrs, they will move from Ocean View Hotel, proceed to Belfield on the East Coast of Demerara and back to Carifesta Avenue for the finish and prize giving ceremony.
