At a reception to mark the Chinese New Year on Wednesday at the Chinese embassy on Mandela Avenue, Ambassador Zhang Limin said “China and Guyana relations are at its historic best.”
Speaking with the aid of a translator, he described 2012 as a milestone in relations between the two countries as it marked 40 years since formal relations began. He added that cooperation in the fields of medicine, trade, politics and economic aid was expanding and noted that more Chinese companies are interested in investing in Guyana, a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.
President Donald Ramotar described the relationship between Guyana and China as one with great potential, as the two countries have made significant strides to advance their bilateral programme through high-level visits and significant investments in areas such as health, transportation and education. He said that Guyana was extremely grateful and will continue to support all efforts aimed at bringing real benefits to the people of the two countries through stronger partnerships with the Chinese public and private sectors.
According to GINA, President Ramotar noted that China’s economic growth has contributed in a major way to the international economy. Its valuable investments in projects in various parts of the world make a significant contribution to social and economic progress worldwide.
Guyana and China have signed agreements to boost priority projects in the areas of health care, training, transportation and culture during the Eleventh Session for the Guyana/China Joint Commission on Economic Trade and Technical Cooperation.
GINA noted that approximately 34 Guyanese products are exported to China on a yearly basis and Chinese medical missions have been visiting Guyana over the last 20 years to supplement health care services. The construction of the Guyana Inter-national Conference Centre (GICC) and the sugar factory at Skeldon are also examples of tangible support as a result of the Guyana/China partnership.
Laptops for the One Laptop Per Family programme were supplied by the Chinese owned Haier Electri-cal Appliance Limited, and more recently, the Great Wall Computer Shenzhen Com-pany Limited, GINA said.
