Law enforcement officials have released one of the two suspects held in connection with last Friday’s find of 36 kilogrammes of cocaine in a house at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
A Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) official told Stabroek News that based on investigations one person was released while the other person remains in police custody. He said officials are looking for other persons for questioning in connection with the find.
Following the discovery, CANU said that it was all part of an ongoing operation and that ranks entered the house which is accessed through the Ogle Airstrip Road around 2 pm.
Ranks found the 36.3 kgs of cocaine, a magazine for a rifle with 15 or 17 rounds and a second magazine for a submachine gun with 19 rounds inside in a room.
The cocaine, he said, was in both powder and brick form supporting the conclusion that it was being prepared for shipment out of Guyana. He could not estimate the value of the drugs as according to him, it all depends on where it was heading but this newspaper was subsequently told that by sources that it could fetch as much as US$1.1 million ($220 million).
