Despite a three-month lay-off University of Guyana Track and Field Club athlete, Wayne Harlequin, won gold in the men’s invitational 800m at the Leroy Brummell fun day at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
Harlequin, who is under the watchful eyes of former Royal Youth Movement Athletics Club coach, Anson Ambrose, now coach at the university, scored his first victory against a star-studded field of athletes which included Ernesto Thomas, Cleveland Thomas and Kevin Bayley.
Running from behind at a cool pace, Harlequin registered 1:57.63 seconds, crossing the finish-line unchallenged. Thomas, of Running Brave Athletics Club and winner of the Atheltics Association of Guyana Cross Country event held earlier in the year, was second in 2:00.21 seconds while Bayley of the Police Progressive Youth Club settled for third (2:01.59 seconds) after leading the race for the first 600 meters.
Abedemi Roberts ran away with the female 800m in 2:38.57 seconds ahead of Janella Jonas 2:38.90 seconds. Shion Boyer was in a distant third in 2:58.61 seconds. Guyana’s 400m sprint sensation, Winston George, also of the Police Progressive Youth Club, outclassed the field in the men’s invitational 100m clocking 10.96 seconds to win from Keith Roberts (Police) and University of Guyana’s Drexell Noble.
Alita Moore was exceptional as in the women’s 100m clocking 12.56 seconds. Tiffany Carto trailed behind to take second with Nadine Rodrigues third.
Athletes will have another opportunity at gauging themselves this Sunday at the first Developmental Meet at the Police Sports Club ground from 10am. This meet will be staged by the Police Progressive Youth Club and all standard track and field events will be under the starter’s and officials’ orders.
