Guyana Defence Force Officer, Captain Natoya Lewis-Fraser, successfully completed her internship at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and has joined the staff of the GDF Medical Corps as a medical doctor. Dr Lewis-Fraser was awarded a scholarship in 2006 and graduated from the University of Guyana in November 2011 with a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree, the GDF said in a press release.
The 30 year old officer, from Vergenoegen, is one of the latest to benefit from the GDF’s policy to provide opportunities for the academic and professional development of its staff. Her parents also served in the GDF and inspired her enlistment. She enlisted as a Cadet Officer and completed her training in 2002. She served in many posts including as Administrative officer at the Ordinance Corps, then at Base Camp Stephenson, and as the Personal Assistant to former Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Edward Collins.
Dr Lewis-Fraser related that her military training and discipline helped her remain focused during her medical studies. The year at GPHC was rewarding since it involved real-world application of her university training.
She expressed gratitude to the GDF for the opportunity to earn her medical degree and looks forward to her service in the Medical Corps.
She hoped that all serving females in the GDF would set achievable goals and encouraged them to ‘make a plan and work the plan’ towards success.
