GROS ISLET, St Lucia, CMC- Discarded West Indies opener Devon Smith smashed his second century to guide Windward Islands to a commanding seven wicket victory over Combined Colleges and Campuses on the fourth day of their regional Four-day Championship match Tuesday.
Smith was unbeaten on 106 as the Windwards cruised to victory at 187 for three after they were set a winning target of 185.
The diminutive Grenadian stroke maker executed an array of shots and received support from Tyronne Theophile and Andre Fletcher who scored 25 runs each while Keddy Lesporis contributed 16.
His 176 minutes occupation of the crease accounted for 11 fours and a six from 133 balls.
Smith, who was voted man of the match, made 139 in the first innings to be the leading scorer in the first round of the Regional 4-day tournament.
Windward Islands sensed victory when three wickets fell quickly as CCC slumped from a comfortable 141 for three to a precarious overnight score of 187 for six in their second innings.
Their middle and lower order rallied when play resumed but stuttered in the face of an accurate spell of fast bowling from fast bowler Neilon Pascal.
The lanky pacer added to CCC’s misery by destroying the lower order to snatch all four remaining wickets.
Pascal who bowled Anthony Alleyne for a duck Monday finished with impressive figures of five for 81 including two maidens after grabbing three for 92 in the first innings.
Akeem Dewar hit five fours to compile a well played 52 before he was caught by Garey Mathurin as CCC tried to build a formidable target for the Windwards.
Nekoli Parris chipped in with 37 until he also fell victim to Pascal’s pace as Keddy Lesporis took the catch.
