Prohabi Singh was yesterday sentenced to a year in jail after he admitted to stealing his father’s bicycle and pawning it for $2,000.
Magistrate Leslie Sobers handed down the sentence at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where he was told that on February 10, at Prospect, East Bank Demerara, Singh, 23, stole the bicycle, valued $13,000, from Ramesh Singh.
Ramesh Singh said that it was not the first time that his son had been convicted for stealing from him. He said that he was previously sentenced for stealing a number of articles from his home. “He does thief things from the home and when I talk about it, there is always an argument between me and his mother,” the angry father said.
When given the opportunity to speak, Prohabi Singh said, “I carry the bike by one of me soldiers them where I does work and pawn it for $2,000 but I told him that we could go back and collect it.”
Prosecutor Shellon Daniels the man’s father was later taken to a location but his son said that he could not remember to whom he pawned the bike. Daniels further stated that the father then took his son to the police station, where he was arrested and charged.
