A second Linden school has started a protest over a mosquito infestation at their institution and once again there are reports that complaints were made to regional education officials about the situation but nothing was done.
Hundreds of students from the Wismar/Christianburg Secondary School took to the streets around 10 am yesterday and were later assured by Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon during a general assembly that efforts were being made to rectify the situation.
Teachers and students of the school told Stabroek News that the situation had become so unbearable that a decision was made to protest. Stabroek News was made to understand that the school’s head teacher made a number of reports to education officials via telephone but no attempts were made to visit to assess the situation.
Contacted last evening Solomon said that he became aware of the situation when he saw students congregate on the river bank across from the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) building. He said that he believes that the students were unable to get across the river because the bridge was closed for repairs.
He said that later he met with the students at a general assembly where he was told that complaints had been made for several days but nothing was done. He said that based on what he was told the regional education officials were “very neglectful”.
Solomon said that as the Chairman of the Regional Education Committee the situation at this school was never brought to his attention.
He noted that in light of a similar situation at the Wisburg Secondary School earlier in the week, chemicals were procured. However he could not say if both schools were fogged during the course of yesterday.
He said that he views the situation as a very serious one. He said that the head at Wisburg showed him a log book of the complaints that she had made.
Teachers of Wisburg began a sit-in exercise on Monday.
