A miner died yesterday after he was stabbed in his chest with a knife by an elderly man whom he had a misunderstanding with.

Dead is 33-year-old Winsel Roger Edwards of Guy-Hoc Housing Scheme who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday.

An eyewitness said that about 13:35 hrs yesterday, Edwards was inflating his bike wheel when he was approached by his assailant “Chetty” who plunged a knife into his chest several times.

He said that the two had an argument at the vulcanising shop yesterday morning and Chetty used  threatening language towards Edwards.

The eyewitness added “everything happen so quick is like me and them men wuh been on the bridge couldn’t save he because this old man move so slick”.

He said that it was a pre-mediated act.

A taxi driver who declined to mention his name said that the two were close associates who would normally hang out at a bar which is in close proximity to where the stabbing occurred.

He said that on Thursday night Edwards along with some others were at the bar for a “Valentine’s night party” where he and his assailant were having a few drinks.

When Stabroek News visited the location yesterday, dozens of persons gathered outside of the vulcanising shop where Edwards spent his last hours, figuring out what could have caused the stabbing.

“You see if Roger was an ignorant young man I would have said that it was a heated argument that they had that led to what happen; He was a real good man to be around and right now is hard for us to process what happen”, a friend of Edwards said.

Clairmont Greenidge, who is the proprietor of the vulcanising shop, said that Edwards was employed part time at the shop when he was out of the interior where he worked as a miner.

Greenidge added that Edwards decided to stay for the upcoming Mashramani celebrations though he was scheduled to return to the interior last month.

Edwards’ mother Patricia Dainty said that she last spoke to her son on Thursday.

Dainty added that Edwards decided to stay in Georgetown to see his brother who also works as a miner in the interior.

“Honestly I can’t say what happen, but I was told that the “Chetty” (whom she also knows) stab he. Roger couldn’t defend himself because he caught him off guard”, the shaken mother said.

Edwards who had no children, was described as a generous man who would go the extra mile for persons in need of assistance. He was also said to be a sociable person who was well-known around the Guy-Hoc area.

“Chetty” who is in his 70’s is currently at the East La Penitence police station assisting with the investigations.
