A 24-year-old man accused of discharging a loaded firearm at his aunt was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on January 24, at Lodge Housing Scheme, Osafo Yard discharged a loaded firearm at Georgina Reynolds with the intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm.
Yard pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.
Police Prosecutor Alexis David-Hossanah explained that the virtual complainant (VC) is the defendant’s aunt and they are neighbours.
She stated that on the day in question, the defendant was washing his car and water went into the VC’s yard.
An argument ensued during which Yard became angry, pointed a gun at Reynolds and fired a shot, which strayed and hit Yard’s brother, the prosecutor said.
She added that the matter was reported and the defendant was arrested and subsequently charged.
Attorney-at-law Dexter Todd who represented Yard stated that his client was not a licensed firearm holder and has an unblemished record.
Counsel said that some time last year persons broke into his client’s home and stole $2 million.
He claimed that one of the persons arrested in connection with the break in is the VC’s brother; another relative is yet to be arrested.
The lawyer told the court that on the day in question, his client and Reynolds had an argument and he left the scene.
Sometime later, the lawyer said, the defendant was contacted and told that should he drop the matter against the VC’s relatives, she will also drop the case against him.
He emphasized that the alleged incident happened since last month and Reynolds only recently reported the matter to the police station.
Police Prosecutor Alexis David-Hossanah objected to bail citing the seriousness of the crime.
After listening to submissions, the magistrate denied Yard his pre-trial freedom.
The matter will continue on February 27.
