With Mashramani Day approaching, we asked children and young people what their plans were. Their comments follow:
Bridgette Pyle – North Georgetown Primary: ‘I plan to go out on the streets and take a look at the fantastic floats. I plan to go out because it is a new year and the other reason is because I did not go out last year. The floats are usually fascinating and very colourful and it is really nice to see the amazing costumes and dance to some Guyanese soca.’
Ronaldo De Abreu – Green Acres Primary: ‘Well this year I plan on sitting down and watch the floats as they go by. I would usually come out every year with my mom and cousins. It is so much fun to see the children mashing to the music in the children’s costume parade. I would like to encourage everyone to come out.’
Josiah Reuben Eastman – North Georgetown Primary: ‘I plan on having fun and enjoying myself watching the floats and listening to the music. I came out last year. Mashramani is getting bigger and better every year. I came out again this year to see the new schools and I must say there is something new every year to see. It’s getting fantastic every year.’
Julia Hazelwood – student: ‘This year I will be mashing with APNU. This would be my second time mashing with them. It’s fun and it’s part of the Guyanese culture. My friends and I would be going.’
Thierry Bobb Semple – Mae’s Schools: ‘I would usually come out every year with mommy and daddy. I like the costumes for this year’s children mash. They are very colourful and nice. I also like the soca music.’
Beyonce Lindo – student: ‘I will be mashing down the road. I would usually go out every year with my mom to the children’s mash and we would also go out on the 23rd late in the afternoon.’
Giovanni Deroche – ‘This year I would be mashing with the APNU band. This would be my first year with them and also it’s my first year going out to mash.’
Giselle Wilson – ‘This year I will be on the road with APNU. This is my first year with them. I will be mashing with them because they have the best costumes. This year my friends and I will be hitting the roads on Mash Day. Also this is the first year I going out and mash.’
David Colran – student ‘I plan on going out on the road. I might go and mash with Banks. I would usually be out here with my friends.’
Clifford Edwards –Student: ‘I will be going out with APNU this year. They have the best costumes. This would be my second year mashing in a band. Every year I would go out and take a look at the floats.
This year I choose to go in a band because standing up and looking is boring. My sister and I would be going out this year.’
